Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as a public speaker. She is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency the website which includes videos and commentary on the representation of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic as well as an award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency, a website designed to provide education on female roles in pop culture, is run by Sarkeesian. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes that are associated with females in popular culture, she also tries on issues related to targeted harassment against women, as well as the marginalized groups of individuals in the internet world. Sarkeesian is a graduate in Political and Social Thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she's extremely sought-after and has given talks at TEDxWomen and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identities and feminisms from at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009 when she was studying at the University. She had a plan to launch a web series on gender representation within video games, and was herself the target of a cyber-bullying campaign. The attack did be a deterrent, but it only strengthened her resolve to be a feminist media critic. To honor the numerous accomplishments she's made to feminist movements, she has been an award winner. Anita Sarkeesian is an award nominated media critic as well as the director of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit which studies the portrayals of women in pop culture storylines.
